Challenge No. 1 Update / GTA IV Post Mortem

I will miss you Niko Bellic. It’s a bittersweet moment for me right now. I get to cross a GTA game off my list, but sadly my time with Niko is now over. There’s always the possibility I’ll go back and do some trophy hunting, but who’s kidding whom here? I’ve got 9 other GTA games to finish.

Niko… Good old Niko, He has to be the most likable protagonist in all the GTA games. By the end, you really care about this mass murdering, car jacking cop killer. I didn’t once go looking for prostitutes, and I felt a little dirty after I went up for warm coffee with Michelle. He’s just a really nice guy. No wonder he has so many friends.

My main issue, and probably the reason why I gave up on it half way through, was the occasional high difficulty level combined with the lack of a check point system. It is absolutely no fun when you have to drive half way across the map, activate the mission, drive to your destination, engage in a shootout, then get busted by the cops, and have to start the whole thing over again. This is nothing new to the GTA series, but it still makes Carcus angry. Thankfully, GTA IV attempted to deal with these types of frustrations, and made many improvements over its predecessors. The GPS system, mission restart option, and auto save function are welcome advancements, but a check point system would’ve really saved the day here.

All in all, GTV IV was a great experience, and a prefect way to start the challenge. I’m pumped!

Here’s the updated list:

Grand Theft Auto (PS1)
Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 (PS1)
Grand Theft Auto 2 (PS1)
Grand Theft Auto III (PS2)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (PSP)
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (PSP)
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (PSP)
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City (PS3)

I just ordered the GTA PS1 collection, so wish me luck.
